Every year Working Mother Magazine puts out a list of the top companies to work for if you are a working mother. They judge which companies should be on the list using seven different factors: workforce profile, compensation, child care, flexibility, time off and leaves, family-friendly programs and company culture. The first on the list is workforce profile. In this category working mother magazine is looking a workplace where the people that work there are understanding of working mothers. If several other working mothers are also employed at an organization it is considered a plus. The second on the list is compensation. Working mothers have more than just themselves to be providing for; therefore they should be compensated accordingly. If something were to happen to the working mother the company not only needs to think about one person, but all the people that person was providing for, and compensate accordingly. Childcare is the third factor. A lot of larger IT shops now days are providing on site child care for mothers. Other smaller companies make agreements with local daycare organizations to help take some of the stress off of leaving children alone during the day. Flexibility is the fourth factor. Working mothers have a lot to deal with, whether it is having to leave early for a dentist appointment, or just taking the time during the day to talk to there children on the phone. A company needs to flexible and understand that a mother has other responsibilities as well and be flexible around that. Time off and leaves is the fifth on the list. Working mothers need a break from the office and might not have a lot of advance notice. A company needs to work around these problems, a lot of that comes from being flexible. Family-friendly programs are the sixth factor on the list. This relates to a company involving the entire family in the company. Whether it is something like bring your child to work day or just having a summer company picnic where the whole family is invited, it will help to strengthen the bond between the family and company. It also helps in getting coworkers to know a bit more about each other. Actually being able to meet the people that are being talked about in the office. The seventh and final judge in making a good company for a working mother is company culture. A company that is safe and presentable to a family is important. In order to have programs like bring your child to work day you would need the children to feel accept and safe in the workplace. |
