Disposing of old computers is a problem that is starting to really affect the general population. A lot of people are upgrading their computer every three or so years. With more and more people buying computers, the old ones need to be disposed of.
The best option to dispose of an old computer is to either bring it to your local landfill; usually they have a special area for disposing of electronic parts. A lot of the places that sell computers also offer of disposing of options, this even includes mail order companies like dell. As far as I know NDSU auctions off there old computers to the general public to dispose of them. At my high school they were sent to Africa after they no longer met the requirements to run up to date software. I really don't see any problems with having prison inmates taking apart old computers. They would be given some sort of protection when dealing with hazardous parts and it would be a service to the community. As far as sending the computers to Africa, the students there learn to use a computer without incurring the cost of buying hundreds of brand new ones. I don't think that most people are aware of how to properly dispose of an old computer. I think that it is in the best interest of everyone that when purchasing a new computer the sales person makes it clear what needs to be done. I also think that it should be a free service, I see a lot of places charging to take old computers. Charging people only leads to more and more people just throwing computers into random dumpsters. |
